- Engagé dans l'armée américaine en 1943 ; il rejoint l'University of Oklahoma après la guerre en 45 où il obtient un diplôme de journaliste.
- Métier qu'il pratique de 1948 à 1962, année où il a rejoint l'université du Nouveau-Mexique.
- Il intégre la faculté de journalisme de celle-ci en 1966 où il enseignera jusqu'en 1987.
- Son premier roman est publié en 1970.
- Ses ouvrages sont
inspirés par la culture Navajo à quatre exeptions
près :
- Le Garçon qui inventa la libellule : Conte pour enfant inspiré par la culture Zuñi.
- La mouche sur le mur : intrigue dans la presse politique
